I Don’t Sleep

I don’t sleep and I have a problem with that.

No, I’m not an insominac.

No, I don’t have sleep apnea.

No, it doesn’t affect my productivity during the day.

I’ve never required much sleep.

But this is still a problem because all of the latest research, studies, scientists, sleep gurus and children’s books say that we’re suppose to sleep 8 hours a night. The latest information  says if we don’t we will gain weight!



OMGoodness, I sleep 4-5 hours a night! No wonder I can’t lose a pound! I thought it was because I don’t exercise!



So AGAIN, I’m going to do my best to CONSCIOUSLY override my biology, that is obviously set on NIGHT-OWLish and make myself go to bed at  midnight, as opposed to 3am, and wake 8 hours later.

Whenever I engage in this biological tug of war, the results are ALWAYS the same.  I wake up 4 hours later- 4am.


 But hey, I’ve gotten my required sleep so I jump up and think, “Hot dog! The kids won’t be up until 8! I have a whole 1/2 day to myself!”  Happy dance!


I am  enamored with my many opportunities: I can go walking outside or on the threadmill-but my body isn’t as excited about that opportunity; it reminds me that this is bedtime.

I can blog or work on my ebook-but my brain says that requires a little too much thinking, it’s really bedtime.

I can have a intimate, stimulating conversation with my husband. He is usually up because he’s also a nightowl, but around 4am he’s starting to settle down because it’s bedtime.

I can get a jump on the laundry, bleach down the  bathrooms, organize my desk, but my brain challenges me, “why would you get up at 4am to do mundane house work?!”


I walk around relishing my senses in a quiet, dark house.




And as always, I settle down with my favorite thing to do: I sit down to read my Bible, have prayer and meditate. Ahhhhh!

But 30 minutes into it I’m asleep! 10 minutes later I wake up in my chair groggier & sleepier than…the last time I tried to overide my biology!

I stumble back to my bed and collapse onto the mattress. It’s 4:45am, a little later than my regularly scheduled bedtime.

My body now kicks in to get it’s pre-programmed, required 4 hours. It also has to re-calibrate the programmed glitch that I caused when I went to bed at midnight, so it decides to calculate an additional 2hrs of needed sleep.

I don’t wake up until after11am!!

I jump out of bed appalled! How dare the bed molested me into a deep sleep! How did my pillows turn into fluffy clouds and my husband’s piggy sounds melt into angelic songs?!

I’m flabbergasted at my body’s betrayal! I yell at it, “I went to bed at midnight! We are rested! Why did you not get up until 11am? You know all I have to do today!”

And as always, my body responds with the same answer, “I got this. There are some things that are pre-programmed and are going to happen until they are programmed to NOT. The egg released from your ovaries, your breathe, the beating of your heart,  your need to sleep and 10,000 other functions are all handled by me. You’re the fool for thinking that you can control it. The wisdom of the body is created and evolved; it’s greater than the limited thoughts of your changing wants. On this you’ll have to trust ME.”

MORALE OF THE STORY: Don’t fight it. Go with the flow of life. Pay attention to the patterns and align yourself with those; regardless of what the “experts” say.

My Feng Shui Home Office COMPLETED!!

AWWWW! A sigh of relief! I started this feng shui project back in April of 2010. If you go back you can read and see pics of my home office through out the process.

Well the last week of December 2010 I decided enough was enough. I wanted my home office completed. I still had 3 more walls to peel 4 layers of wall paper off of; however someone told my son about their mother renting a steamer from Home Depot.
Why didn’t the Home Depot people mention that to me when I was going in to by BOTTLES of non-effective, cough-inducing chemical spray?

So I went off and rented 1 for $50 a day. 2 girlfriends came all the way from GA and we stood around and steamed and talked and talked and steamed for 2 days and (almost) 2 nights straight! I have no pics of that because we looked like women who had been steaming walls for 2 days and 2 nights! I would step away and fix breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and to do a couple of radio interviews; but other than that I sat in the room with them and keep them throughly entertained with delightful conversation.

When they left it was on me to plaster the wall from top to bottom. I’ve never done this before and didn’t even know that it was an activity let alone an art, but I tried my hand and did quite well. No pics. I was working too hard.

Then I had to prime the walls.

Then I painted.
During this week long process I continued to school the children, coached clients, do teleseminars, facilitate my women’s power networking meeting, cook the meals and “take care” of the husband. WHEW!

Above the door is a plaque that reads:

The water fountain sits to the left of the rocking chair. The chair is fitted with my custom designed covering that matches the curtains that I made. This is where I sit in the mornings to read my Bible and meditate.

I decided to keep the chandelair instead of replacing it with a ceiling fan. I think the brass and crystal adds a touch of class!

I just realized that the wall where my desk sits is missing. Well it’s too messy to snap picks now…maybe I’ll insert it later.

At night when my baby girl gets sleepy I sit and hold her while typing at the computer. But some nights she will allow me to make her a pallet, and lay on the exercise mate under the treadmill. With the lights low, a candle burning and her soft breathing sounds in the background it makes me feel sooo grateful to be able to work from home.

Gluten Free…Mom, What’s for Dinner?


Hi.  I’m Lady T’s friend, Mary Blackburn author of Gluten Free Get-Togethers.  I blog over at Easy Gluten Free Living.  I have been gluten free since 1987 when I was diagnosed with celiac disease.  Lady T asked me if I would share some insight into living and working gluten free with her readers.  So I hope you find some value in this information.

As hard working mothers, we are always looking for shortcuts to making dinner.  But what if you have a child that is gluten intolerant or has celiac disease?  Are there any right off the store shelf foods that you can have for a quick dinner?  Here’s just some of the brands that I look to for dinner for my family.

  • Meat:  Poultry, Fish, Canned Salmon, Canned Chicken, Canned Tuna, 100% Ground Beef, Pork, Turkey, Chicken
  • Prego Spaghetti Sauce
  • Joan of Arc Kidney Beans
  • Canned Tomatoes / Dei Fratelli Seasoned Diced Tomatoes
  • Hormel Pepperoni and Hormel Turkey Pepperoni
  • Any and all fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Frozen Vegetables (Not packaged with sauces, except Walmart’s Value Time, they are processed in a facility that also processes wheat)
  • Potatoes both white and sweet
  • Pure Rice – Brown, white, basmati, (Not Rice a Roni or such, it has wheat pasta mixed in)
  • Corn Tortilla Shells / Corn Taco Shells
  • Ortega Brand Taco Seasoning Mix
  • Quaker Plain Rice Cakes (not the flavored ones)
  • Salsa
  • Cereals – Chex Brand, Corn, Rice (or any with the new Gluten Free Label), Cream of Rice, Grits
  • Eggs
  • Milk – Cow, Soy, Rice, Goat
  • Real Cheese (such as mozzarella, cheddar, and such), Velveeta Cheese, Philadelphia Cream Cheese (plain), Cheese Whiz
  • Sour Cream (not light or reduced calorie or fat free, they can contain fillers that could have wheat in them)
  • Butter
  • I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter brand Margarine (there may be others but this is the only brand I know for certain)
  • Yoplait, Breyers, Yogurt, (check ingredient label, not all flavors are gluten free)
  • Cracker Barrel Cheese
  • Kaukauna Cheese
  • Beans and Bean Flours
  • Lay’s Potato Chips
  • Dorito’s Cool Ranch Tortilla Chips
  • Cheeto’s Brand corn snacks
  • Salted or Plain Nuts and Seeds (as long as they are not seasoned)
  • Nut Flour
  • Heinz ketchup
  • Kraft Miracle Whip Salad Dressing
  • All Vinegars except Malt Vinegar
  • Lea & Perrin’s Worcestershire Sauce (in the United States)
  • French’s Yellow and Spicy Brown Mustard
  • Guldens Spicy Brown Mustard
  • Pickles
  • Pickle Relish
  • Be Wary of Soy Sauce there are some gluten free brands but you need to check labels.
  • Most of Kraft Salad Dressings


There are now even ready made gluten free tortellini and ravioli.  The brand I like is Conte’s.

Just remember to read labels.  All labels, all the time.  If you have any favorites that are not listed here feel free to leave a comment letting me know what I’ve missed.

Just as an addendum, my husband bought a bag of Snyder’s of Berlin Potato Chips the other day.  Snyder’s of Berlin Potato chips are not gluten free.  They say right on the bag that they are processed in a factory that also processes wheat products.

So please be sure to check package labels, always.
