Submitting To Your Husband

I'm a submissive wife...but

Lady T and Hubby

Her question was, “Should a woman submit to a husband who is not following God?”

Okay, so I am a Pastor’s wife and I am a Follower of Christ, but I am NOT the traditional church woman and despise traditional church answers.

You know, when people just recite the stereotypical answers that they’ve heard others preached for the last 2k years.  For example: I started on my Master’s Degree at a popular seminary here in SC and was thoroughly excited!!  Surrounded by professional theologians I thought I could finally get answers to the questions that no one had been able to give me.

One professor was teaching/preaching pretty good and got sidetracked on the subject of women wearing pants. I asked him about the historic context of that teaching. I understood the scripture that we use to justify the teaching, however Jesus and men around the world (!) wore a garment that looked like a dress. How and when did we prohibit men from wearing that type of garment and relegate it as an item that “pertainth” to women?

This Harvard trained, M. Div professor gave me the same answer that an old country, uneducated Alabama preacher gave me!

That happened several times on different subjects.

I’m seeking a different seminary to complete my Masters degree.  I can’t bring myself to go back there.

So, when the question was posed to me about submitting to one’s husband I only gave one side of the story. I talked about the power women have over their husbands. You are his “helpmate” because he needs HELP. If we don’t get sidetracked by the inaccurate, manipulative teachings on the subject of SUBMISSION we would be able to clearly see our power.  You are the jewel in his crown.  You are the FAVOR of God manifested in his life.  I then gave the picture image of the Captain of a ship who may have great navigational skills and superior knowledge of weather conditions. However,  if there is no wind when he unfurls his sails he is stuck in one place.  If there is too much wind his ship may be destroyed.

I likened the Captain of the ship to a husband and the wind to a wife.  A woman has the ability to help her husband fearlessly navigate through life.  But if she’s stormy (moody, bad attitude, has issues she hasn’t overcome) she can destroy him (kill his motivation, beat him down). We are powerful beings yet when we try to grab hold of the steering wheel (usurp authority) the ship goes in circles. We don’t get to far in life and tend to blame the captain.

Meekness is restrained power.  We can walk powerfully in our businesses and be meek when dealing with our men. I went into a spill about the male ego blah, blah.

The thing that bothered me today is that I never answered the question about submitting to your husband who “is not following God.”

My answer: NO!

But that depends on several factors. All of which goes beyond the scope of this professional business blog.  If you really want to know email me and I’ll give you my  biblically sound opinion.

If you want to listen to the entire interview click here and go to the bottom of the page.

BTW, my husband/Pastor describes me as a “very submissive wife”.

What do you think of the subject of submitting to your husband?

This article was very interesting, particularly since I was searching for thoughts on this subject. I’m listening to the show now and your thoughts are refreshing! Not the typical pastor’s wife indeed!
