If you have found yourself in the precarious situation of always giving your services away for free to family, friends and even potential clients you have to stop and ask yourself, “what the heck is wrong with me?”
Now don’t misunderstand: if you are just starting your home base business or have very little experience in the field, then donating your services or charging a low fee can help you to build up your credentials and confidence.
Even though I had been coaching for 13-15 years, it wasn’t something that I did as a business. I helped people when it was convenient. Sometimes 2-3 people a year and sometimes 15-20 a year. It’s a natural gift and therefore I never paid much attention to it. (Doesn’t everyone help each other people build their business?) I didn’t even know there was a industry called “coaching”! Most of the women were strangers to begin with so when they would make a surprise visit a year or two later to tell me how I helped them I would have already forgotten who they were. I never bothered to ask them to give me a testimonial or even tried to keep up with them. Consequently when I started coaching ON PURPOSE and on the internet in particular, I found myself needing to do some pro bono work to establish myself.
Donating your products and services is a great way to:
- launch a new business
- help you create desirable products
- gather information about your potential customer/clients
- get testimonials
- determine your price points
But when you start to get a steady stream of customers/clients, or when your free services becomes a burden to your time and energy and yet you are still giving your products and services away. You must take responsibility and ask yourself why?
- Are you not confident?
- Are you afraid of what they (family & friends) will say?
- Are you not taking your business seriously?
There are 3 phrases you should learn:
- “I would like to help, but my time is limited to paying customers at this time.”
- ” NO”
Practice these phrases in the mirror regularly until it feels comfortable rolling off your tongue.
Deal with your issues and start making money.
