This is part 3 of my series on Feng Sui. I’m re-doing my home office, using feng shui techniques to see if the theory is true. Will I become rich, Rich, RICH if I feng shui my home office? Prosperity, serenity and wealth are the claims of those who teach and practice feng shui. Madonna, Oprah, Bill Gates and Donald Trump all hire feng shui masters to help them decorate and build their homes and corporate buildings.
Well, I don’t have Trump money but I did spend 4 hours on a Sunday evening re-arranging my office. If you read part 2 of this series you know that I abandoned one room for another and both were disorganized messes. As embarrassing as it was, I snapped the pictures of both offices without pre-cleaning. (I’m not a slob, just a homeschooling mom with 5 kids. We live in every room! After teaching, chauffeuring, cooking, washing, etc,; running my business, tending to my husband-who, thankfully, is very low maintenance-I use the rest of my energy training, drilling, and reminding the kids to clean. Then the REST of my energy is used to stay on top of the half done cleaning. Therefore my office/sewing room/ exercise room is often neglected. Yes, that’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it!)
Here are the before and after pictures.
I chose the rarely used sewing/exercise room just because it sits in the career area of the bagua map.
I found a place for my sewing equipment and shifted the room from the right to the left. I’m feeling pretty harmonious in here, but that’s the case whenever I clean up and clear clutter.
WAIT, I’m choosing to be conscious about these changes. The feng shui theory states that everything has energy and the flow of energy affects you negatively of positively.
Here are 5 simple steps to help positive energy flow in your home office:
1. Clear Clutter– common sense and very practical. I become unconsciously frustrated when I’m surrounded by clutter. I feel irritated by…things; and it’s not until I stop to pay attention to my thoughts that I realize, “it’s this junky room!”
2. Make use of natural light-this room only has one window and it was very tempting to place the treadmill in front of it so that I can watch the birds while walking. However that would block out a portion of the light.
3. Use plants to purify the air-I love plants but we currently only have one in the entire house. “Why?”, you ask? Because little boys LOVE to dump the dirt. Run their cars through the dirt. Walk their men through the “jungle”. Whack through the foliage with their toy swords. Hide their toys in the plants. Eat the plants. And pull off leaves to bring me flowers. I have not gone out to buy a plant for the interior in 8 or 9 years. The youngest boy is 4 and now I have a 3yr girl…so maybe I buy a few plants and not have them destroyed. Spider plants are good for detoxifying the air.
4.Hang pictures and affirmations that generate positive feelings and support your mission-I have relevant affirmations taped onto my walls and affirmations. I also have a mini-version of my vision board in my office. These help me to stay focused. I plan to hang a picture or two later. You could hang pictures of things that motivate you: money, foreign countries, your children, a particular car, etc.
5. Use color-colors have a subconscious affect on us; so you have to be conscious about the colors you use. If you need your home office to be a place of peace and calm then choose a soothing green or pale blue. If you like to think of yourself as a wheeler & dealer then use red. Orange & yellow are energizers. Purple is seen as a spiritual color and is a good choice if your home business is about connecting people. I’ve already mentioned my experience with a beautiful color that turned out to be my nightmare. So this time I’ll think about color in terms of shades. In other words: I LOVE red. But I can imagine that after several months of sitting in a red office I’ll feel fried! So I’ll have to look at different shades of red and not just fire engine red-which is my favorite shade.
These are all very basic. However, the more I research fung shui in order to make changes in my home office the more I realize that there’s a lot to learn! So I contacted a fung shui expert and will take with her directly. I’ll keep you posted.
